The Mill Road Winter Fair is a completely volunteer-organised event. We’re just a bunch of enthusiasts who keep the ball rolling, and love to involve people in the organising and running of the event.

We are now actively recruiting volunteers for the 2024 Fair, which will be on Saturday 7th December. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support the organisation and planning of the event, and most importantly as volunteer stewards on the day. We can’t run the Fair without you, so please do consider getting involved!

We are also open to any ideas you have. Is there something you’d like to do or contribute to make the Fair even better? Let us know!

To register your interest in becoming a volunteer steward or to help in other ways, please fill out the form below. For anything else, you can get in touch via [email protected] or if you have another sort of enquiry let us know via [email protected]

Getting involved as a volunteer needn’t take much time, but is really rewarding – getting to know people, places and feeling part of something. The upcoming events where we need your help on the day or in the run-up are:
  • Summer Shindig, Sunday 14th July at Romsey Rec. This is an afternoon party in our local park, with live music, food stalls, and activities for kids.
  • Mini Film Festival, Saturday 21st September. Takes place at the Covent Garden Drama Centre from 2-9pm.
  • Comedy Night, Friday 18th October, at Thrive on Norfolk Street.
  • Mill Road Winter Fair, Saturday 7th December, 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Here are some options to get involved at different levels:

Could you spare a couple of hours?

  • Leafleting. Simple but super-important. In the two weeks leading up to any event, we generally do a leaflet drop through letter boxes in the streets off (and on) Mill Road.
  • Stewarding. The chance to don a hi-vis for a couple of hours and help organisers and the public with questions, directions, simple instructions. Requires an additional one-hour briefing meeting in advance, where you meet the team.
  • Helping run family craft activities during the Shindig (slots between 3.30 and 7pm).

Got more time or just good ideas?

  • For Mill Road Fringe, we are looking for people to suggest new event ideas and work with us to make them happen. What do you love that would bring local people together? All ideas are welcome!
  • Or would you like to help the team with ideas that are already underway? For example, a Mill Road Poetry Festival, a pavement pop-up ‘My Junk/Your Treasure’ trail and the Summer Shindig in 2024.

Like to join the Winter Fair organising team?

We currently have three opportunities on our committee. These require more commitment because they are part of the team that makes the Fair such a huge and successful event.

  • Committee Vice Chair – Learn all about planning the Winter Fair by working closely with the Chair to provide support and connect with other members of the Planning Group. You will need to attend monthly MRWF Planning Group meetings, which become more frequent in the autumn.
  • Logistics Coordinator – Organise the physical infrastructure of the Fair (signage and equipment), including sourcing and delivering equipment, coordinating set-up and checking status during the Fair. Work directly with the Chair/Vice Chair. You will need to be practical and hands-on, use your own initiative, and attend fortnightly Planning Group meetings from October onwards up to the Fair.
  • Deputy Stalls Support – Work alongside the Stalls Lead to respond to, collate and assess the food and craft stalls applications and allocation. Proficiency in Excel spreadsheets would be an asset.
